Introduction and Origins
Juncus effusus, commonly known as Common Rush, is a native perennial plant found throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe and Italy. It is a pioneer species that inhabits wetlands, marshes and riverbanks, distinguished by its incredible hardiness and ability to thrive in diverse environmental conditions.
Excellence in Phytoremediation
The true strength of Juncus effusus lies in its ecological function. It is considered one of the most effective plants for phytoremediation (natural water treatment).
- Root action: Its rhizomatous roots form a dense underground network that not only anchors the soil but also hosts colonies of beneficial bacteria. These microorganisms break down organic matter and absorb heavy metals, nitrates and phosphates responsible for water turbidity and algae growth.
- Substrate oxygenation: Unlike other plants, the Reed is able to transport oxygen from its aerial parts down to its roots, releasing it into the mud or substrate. This process prevents the formation of anoxic (oxygen-deprived) zones and unpleasant odours, keeping the pond healthy and clear.
Characteristics and Habit
It appears as a dense clump of cylindrical stems, a bright dark green in colour, lacking true leaves. The stems grow vertically, reaching a height of between 40 and 100 cm, giving the pond an architectural and orderly appearance. In summer, it produces small golden-brown inflorescences that sprout from the sides of the stems, adding a very striking rustic and wild touch.
Hardiness and Care
It is a completely hardy plant, completely unfazed by severe frost. During winter it often remains green, or takes on bronze-coloured tones, before sprouting vigorously again in spring.
- Position: It prefers full sun or partial shade. It is very versatile: it can thrive with its roots submerged in a few centimetres of water or in constantly moist soil.
- Care: It requires very little maintenance. Simply cut back the dry stems at the base in late winter to encourage new growth. It is not an overly invasive plant, but its constant growth ensures effective filtration year after year.

- Depth: 0 to -15 cm (can tolerate brief periods of deeper submersion).
