Scientific name: Oryzias latipes
Common name: Medaka, Japanese rice fish
Name of this colour variant: Mixed Medaka
Size: up to 4 cm
Life expectancy: < 2 years
Description: mixed fish in variable, unselected colours. Very active fish that you will see swimming around your pond or mini pond and that will help maintain a balance by eating mosquito larvae in your tubs.
Other characteristics: Medaka are fish that adapt easily to the outdoor environment and are usually used to beautify aquariums. They are also excellent for keeping in ponds and tubs all year round. The water temperature can vary from 0 to 40 °C, while the size and depth of the container or tub should be at least 50-60 litres and 40-50 cm. In addition, submerged and floating plants provide Medaka with shelter and oxygen.
They do not need any special feeding; in a balanced tub they find the food they need to survive, but if you wish you can also feed them just finely crushed goldfish food.
Please note that if they are fed, they may become lazy and not prey on any mosquito larvae present in the tub.
