It is one of the most popular plants among water garden enthusiasts for its incredible hardiness and ability to gracefully colonise the transition zones between land and water.
Characteristics and Habit
This plant is distinguished by its long, flexible stems that creep along the ground or the water’s surface, rooting at each node. The leaves are opposite, bright green and almost circular in shape. During the summer, the plant is adorned with pretty, cup-shaped yellow flowers that emerge from the leaf axils, creating a very lively colour contrast. Being a completely hardy plant, it withstands very cold temperatures, sometimes losing its above-ground parts in the most extreme climates only to sprout vigorously again in early spring.

Lysimachia nummularia is essential for anyone seeking a natural look in their pond or mini-pond. It is the perfect plant for concealing the edges of pond liners or pre-formed basins, as its branches tend to droop towards the water, creating a green ‘cascade’ effect. Its roots, which also grow in open water, act as a biological filter, removing nitrates and organic matter that would otherwise feed algae. Although it is a less demanding plant than Cotula, its vigour requires attention:
- Containment: Due to its rapid growth, it can become invasive if conditions are ideal. It is advisable to prune it regularly to maintain the desired shape and make room for other, less vigorous plants.
- Exposure: It tolerates both full sun (where it flowers most profusely) and partial shade or full shade.
- Winter: It does not need to be brought indoors. As a pioneer plant in our climate, it withstands frost and snow, returning in full bloom every year without the need for reseeding.
