The genus Nuphar includes approximately 16 aquatic species, primarily found in temperate northern hemisphere regions and subtropics. Nuphar shimadae, named after discoverer Yaichi Shimada, was published by Bunzo Hayata in 1916. This rare endemic species exists only in select Taoyuan County lowland ponds. It features stout rhizomes in mud and floating leaves. Yellow petals appear ready to bloom but remain curled over the ovary. The stigma has 6-10 reddish valves.
