If you are looking for something truly extraordinary, Victoria boliviana is the undisputed queen of aquatic plants. It is not just a water lily: it is the largest ever discovered on our planet.
What makes it unique?
Its leaves are true natural 'flying saucers' that can exceed 3 metres in diameter. They are so sturdy, thanks to a perfect rib structure, that they can support the weight of a child! Its giant, fragrant flowers bloom only at night, offering a magical spectacle that changes from pure white to deep pink in just 48 hours.
The story of an incredible discovery
For almost two centuries, we had the answer right under our noses without seeing it. While everyone thought it was a common Victoria amazonica, a team of scientists led by the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, London (in collaboration with the Bolivian institute Santa Cruz de la Sierra Botanical Garden) unveiled the mystery in 2022.
Thanks to the work of horticulturist Carlos Magdalena, a true celebrity in the botanical world, and DNA testing, it was discovered that this Bolivian species is distinct from its 'sisters' and much more impressive.
