Characteristics and comments: A marvellous ISG (intersubgeneric hybrid) water lily that combines the purple colouring typical of tropical water lilies with the hardiness and cold tolerance of European water lilies. Perfect for both small and medium-sized ponds as well as well-sunlit above-ground ponds and mini-ponds.
Created in 2021 by the Thai hybridiser Khwanyok Kamklang, Nymphaea ‘Khwantara’ represents the pinnacle of modern hybridisation, combining the genetics of tropical water lilies with those of hardy varieties.
The Flower: It features a rich, globular/peony-shaped cup, supported by a stiff, upright stem that allows the flower to rise clearly above the water’s surface. The colour is a vibrant, deep cyclamen/lavender purple, with dense, silky petals that fade gently towards the base on the inside. The centre of the corolla is enlivened by a rich array of bright golden-yellow stamens with shaded tips, creating a luminous and mesmerising colour contrast.
Foliage: The leaves are small to medium in size, rounded and characterised by olive-green tones, enhanced by variegation and bronze-orange and purple edges on the young leaves. The overall habit is neat and compact, ideal for not overwhelming the space and for highlighting the individual upright flower stems.
To bring out the best in ISG varieties and encourage the continuous production of upright purple flowers, it is essential to ensure maximum direct sunlight.
