Characteristics and comments: An exceptional intersubgeneric hybrid (ISG) from 2021. It combines spectacular tiger-striped variegation on the foliage and the purplish tones typical of tropical varieties with complete hardiness and resistance to winter frost.
Created in 2021 by the renowned Thai hybridiser Pornchai Sukkasemsamranjit, Nymphaea ‘Nice Pattaya’ represents the pinnacle of modern hybridisation between tropical and hardy water lilies (ISG).
The Flower: The flowers have a slender, elegant star-shaped form, with tapered, slightly pointed petals, supported by sturdy stems that allow them to rise upright well above the water’s surface. The colour is a vibrant fuchsia/cyclamen pink with distinct purplish hues, brightened at the centre by a rich crown of golden-yellow and bright orange stamens. The plant is remarkably prolific, producing several flowers simultaneously with ease.
The Foliage: The foliage is a true work of art: the leaves are densely and spectacularly marbled with broad streaks of purple, reddish-brown and bronze on a bright light-green background. This unique colour contrast lends a constant tropical touch to the pond, making it highly ornamental even during the lulls between flowering periods.
To fully bring out the strong ISG genetic traits, the splendid variegation of the foliage and to encourage continuous flowering on upright stems, place the plant in full sun. Use a spacious basket with heavy, clay-based soil and fertilise regularly by placing Pondtabbs tablets (available to buy directly from our website) deep into the soil, close to the root system.
