Characteristics and comments: A splendid ISG variety that won international awards in 2022. It stands out for the highly distinctive variegated pattern of its petals, the upright habit typical of tropical varieties, and its complete hardiness and resistance to winter frost.
Created in 2022 by the renowned Thai hybridiser Jakkaphong Sung-Ngam, Nymphaea ‘Pink Kunzite’ is an intersubgeneric hybrid of exceptional value, awarded 2nd place for Best ISG Water Lily at the prestigious International Waterplants Contest (IWC) in 2022.
The Flower: The flower boasts a magnificent star-shaped, open-cup form, rich in slightly elongated petals arranged in perfect harmony. The corolla stands proud and upright on sturdy stems several centimetres above the water’s surface. The colouring is unique: a light pink/lilac base embellished with dense, striking fuchsia-magenta speckles and streaks across the entire surface of the petals, reminiscent of the hues of the precious stone from which it takes its name. At the centre, a striking, dense crown of bright golden-yellow and orange stamens creates a contrasting, sun-like highlight. Flowering is exceptionally profuse, with numerous flower stalks blooming simultaneously.
Foliage: The leaves are rounded, with slightly wavy margins, and are a bright, uniform green on the upper surface. They form a balanced and neat canopy on the water’s surface, acting as the perfect neutral backdrop to highlight the variegated pink of the many emerging flowers.
To bring out the magnificent variegation of the petals and encourage such abundant, upright flowering, place the plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight). Use a spacious basket filled with heavy, loamy soil. To support the intense flowering throughout the growing season, fertilise regularly by placing Pondtabbs tablets (available to buy directly on our website) deep into the soil, close to the root system.
