Characteristics and comments: Multi-award-winning variety from 2024 (3rd place in the IWC ISG category). It combines the extremely rare purple colouring and the typical upright, profuse flowering of tropical water lilies with the full resistance to winter cold of hardy varieties, enhanced by some of the most spectacular variegated foliage of all.
Created in 2024 by the renowned Thai hybridiser Pornchai Sukkasemramranjit, Nymphaea ‘One Purple’ immediately made its mark on the world stage, winning 3rd place at the International Waterplants Contest (IWC) 2024 in the prestigious ISG water lily category.
The Flower: The flowers have a perfect star-shaped form, with numerous slender, elegant petals, borne on sturdy stems that rise proudly above the water’s surface. The colour is a magnetic, intense and brilliant purple-violet/cyclamen, made even more vivid by a dense cluster of golden-yellow stamens with warm orange hues. The plant boasts an astonishing profusion of blooms, capable of producing dozens of buds and opening numerous flowers simultaneously on the same clump.
The Foliage: The foliage is of extraordinary ornamental value: the broad, rounded leaves feature a very dense, tiger-striped marbling with marked dark purple and reddish-brown streaks on a light green background. This zebra-like pattern creates a breathtaking colour contrast with the vibrant purple of the flowers.
Given the exceptional productivity and vigour – both in terms of flowering and growth – of this ISG variety, position it in the sunniest part of the pond (full sun all day). Plant it in a very large basket filled with heavy, clay-rich soil.
