Description

The Iris Louisiana Fulva Dwarf is a variety of iris belonging to the Iris Louisiana group. This group comprises five different iris species native to Louisiana and the surrounding regions of the southwestern United States: Iris Fulva, Iris Hexagona, Iris Brevicaulis, Iris Giganticaerula, and Iris Nelsonii.

The Iris Louisiana Fulva Dwarf is characterized by:

Compact size: It grows to a height of 20-30 cm.

Water adaptability: It thrives in wet areas or can be fully submerged up to 10-20 cm above the crown.

Cold hardiness: It withstands frost and ice, blooming abundantly each spring.

Rapid spread: It spreads quickly, so it’s advisable to divide and replant every two or three years to keep the plants young and vigorous.

Soil and fertilization: It performs well in clayey or sandy soils and can benefit from fertilization with Pondtabbs for more prolific flowering.

To cultivate it, you can follow these steps:

Planting: Louisiana Fulva Dwarf iris plants sold as bare-root rhizomes should be planted in a container or pot. Fill part of the pot with clayey soil, position the rhizome in the center, and cover it with soil, leaving the leaves exposed.

Fertilization: Insert a Pondtabbs tablet about 5-10 cm away from the plant.

Submerged in water: Submerge the pot in water up to 10-20 cm deep.

Transplanting: If purchased in a pot, transplant it to a larger container to ensure sufficient root space.

The Iris Louisiana Fulva Dwarf is an ideal choice for garden ponds, mini ponds, or containers. Remember that autumn is the best time for planting, but you can also do it in spring or summer, although you’ll miss the first-year bloom.
